Today was laid back. Daire napped and saved energy for the events of tomorrow because a giraffe-nap in the middle of the day would cut into possible touring time. So. I walked the streets. Yesterday I was a little apprehensive about being in this country. By a little, I mean really. I was scared. The people seemed impatient, rushed, and like they were going to rob me. After I got comfortable a little, I felt it was possible to stretch my neck a little and going exploring.
I asked the guy behind the counter at my hostel where the closest market was. He called it a "supermarket". No, in america the supermarket is a bit different... Their "supermarket" consisted of two small buildings that were not put together, but were right next door under the same name. One had meat, bread, cheese, and other dairy products. The other (about half the size) had fruits. It was probably the smallest store I have been in, in all my life. It was crammed and I wasn't sure how to say 'excuse me'. I heard something on a movie once but that's Hollywood, baby. So I waited for someone to bump into me to see what they would say. I know what you're thinking and as a matter of fact, yes. I did stand in the middle of the two foot isle. And it worked! I learned how to say 'excuse me', 'please', 'thank you' and 'you're welcome". After taking a moment to sample my surroundings, and stop flopping around like a fish out of water, I survived.
I got strawberries, two apples, four huge rolls, cheese, a handful of carrots, and salami. I went back to my hostel and made lunch for under 7 euros. And now I have lunch for touring tomorrow as well. Yay for cheap and inexpensive food. And forward thinking!
I got gelato today. Delicious. I sandwiched a scoop of lemon with two scoops of strawberry. It was fantastic. I also got gelato again... Nutella this time. I got gelato twice. No shame.
I'm going to sleep now. The Vatican tomorrow. Pictures included.
